How to Do Free GST Reverse Calculation for E-Commerce Sellers

Marketplace prices include GST. Here is the one formula that separates your real revenue from the tax you owe.

1. Why E-Commerce Sellers Need GST Reverse Calculation

On Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and most Shopify stores, the price the customer pays already includes GST. That ₹599 is not your revenue — part of it belongs to the government. GST reverse calculation pulls the tax out of an inclusive price so you know your true taxable value. Below is how to do free GST reverse calculation for e-commerce sellers, with worked examples and a free calculator.

You need it for pricing, profit calculation, invoices and GST returns. Getting it wrong overstates your profit and understates your tax.

2. How to Calculate GST From Total Amount

The GST inclusive to exclusive formula

Example: a product sold at ₹1,180 including 18% GST. Taxable value = 1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000. GST = 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180.

Example: ₹1,050 including 5% GST. Taxable value = 1,050 × 100 ÷ 105 = ₹1,000. GST = ₹50.

The most common mistake

Do not take 18% of the total. 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212.40 — that overstates GST by ₹32.40 on a single order. Always divide by (100 + rate).

Reverse GST formula
Taxable Value (excl. GST) = Total Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Total Amount × GST Rate ÷ (100 + GST Rate)

Check: Taxable Value + GST Amount = Total Amount

3. Worked Marketplace Examples

As the table below shows, the same ₹599 price leaves you ₹570 or ₹508 depending on the rate. That is why your HSN code and its rate must be correct before you fix a selling price.

Since 22 September 2025, India's main GST slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% for a small set of luxury and sin goods (plus special rates such as 3% for gold). Older 12% and 28% rates no longer apply to most goods — check your HSN code against the current rate list.

Reverse GST on a ₹599 marketplace price
GST rateFormulaTaxable valueGST
5%599 × 100 ÷ 105₹570.48₹28.52
18%599 × 100 ÷ 118₹507.63₹91.37
40%599 × 100 ÷ 140₹427.86₹171.14

4. CGST + SGST or IGST?

After you find the GST amount, split it by place of supply. If the buyer is in the same state as your registered place of business, split GST equally into CGST and SGST. If the buyer is in another state, the full amount is IGST.

Example: ₹91.37 GST on an intra-state sale = ₹45.685 CGST + ₹45.685 SGST (rounded on the invoice). On an inter-state sale it is ₹91.37 IGST. Most marketplace orders ship across states, so IGST is common.

5. Reverse GST for Pricing: Working Back From Your Margin

Reverse calculation also helps you set prices. Decide the taxable amount you need to cover cost, fees and margin, then add GST on top: Selling Price = Required Taxable Value × (100 + GST Rate) ÷ 100.

Example: you need ₹500 taxable value at 5% GST → list at ₹525. At 18% → ₹590.

Fees carry their own GST

Marketplace commission and fees attract 18% GST, which you can usually claim as input tax credit. Keep it separate from the GST you collect on the product.

6. Do It in One Click With the Free GST Calculator

The free GST Calculator on ecommercetool.io supports both modes: Exclusive (add GST on top) and Inclusive (extract GST from the total). It shows the CGST + SGST or IGST split and includes an input tax credit (ITC) calculator for your monthly net liability.

It runs entirely in your browser — no sign-up and no data upload.

Open /gst-calculator and choose Inclusive mode
Enter the marketplace price and select the GST rate
Read taxable value, GST and the CGST/SGST or IGST split
Use the ITC section to offset GST paid on purchases and fees

7. Key Takeaways

Taxable value = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate); never take a straight percentage of the total
Current main slabs: 5% and 18% (40% for specified goods)
Same state → CGST + SGST; different state → IGST
Use reverse GST for profit checks and forward GST for setting prices

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST from the total amount?

Divide the total by (100 + GST rate) and multiply by the rate. For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180 GST, leaving a taxable value of ₹1,000.

What is the GST inclusive to exclusive formula?

Taxable value = Total amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST rate). The GST amount is the total minus the taxable value.

Which GST rates apply to most goods now?

Since 22 September 2025 the main GST slabs are 5% and 18%, with 40% for a small set of specified goods and special rates such as 3% for gold. Check the current rate for your HSN code.

Should I use CGST + SGST or IGST?

Use CGST + SGST (split equally) when the buyer is in the same state as your registration, and IGST for sales to another state.
