Free courier charge calculator for online sellers in India

Couriers bill the higher of the actual (dead) weight and the volumetric weight of a parcel. This calculator shows both, rounds up to 0.5 kg slabs, and estimates the charge for local, regional, metro, national and special zones so you can see what a box really costs to ship.

It also simulates the freight you lose on a return to origin (RTO) and suggests how a smaller box could move a parcel into a cheaper slab.

Step by step

  1. 1Enter the box length, width and height in cm, and the actual weight.
  2. 2Choose the courier divisor: 5000 (most surface couriers) or 4000.
  3. 3Compare the billable slab and zone-wise estimates.
  4. 4Try smaller box sizes to see whether the billable weight drops.

How this dead weight vs volumetric weight calculator works

  • Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) ÷ divisor.
  • Billable weight = the higher of dead weight and volumetric weight, rounded up to the next 0.5 kg.
  • Charge = first 0.5 kg rate + additional rate for each further 0.5 kg, plus 10% fuel surcharge and 18% GST.
  • Zone rates are typical sample rates — replace them mentally with your courier’s rate card for exact figures.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my courier charging more than the actual weight?

Because a light but large box has a higher volumetric weight, and couriers bill whichever weight is higher.

Should I use 5000 or 4000 as the divisor?

Use the divisor in your courier or marketplace rate card. 5000 is common for surface shipping in India; some express services use 4000, which makes volumetric weight higher.

Can I use it as a courier rate calculator for ecommerce orders in India?

Yes, as an estimate. It applies typical zone rates (local, regional, metro, national and special zones) with fuel surcharge and GST. Check the result against your own courier or marketplace rate card for exact figures.

How does the Meesho RTO loss calculator work?

When a parcel is returned to origin you lose the forward freight and packaging without earning the sale. The RTO simulator estimates that loss at different RTO rates. For Meesho RTO, set reverse freight to 0%; keep it at 100% for couriers that bill the return leg.
